The first I heard about this place was an article I read in GQ mag. Then months later I see a feature on Anthony Bourdain's show. The food was "out there" with dishes like pork with oyster and shaved frozen foie gras as a dessert.. whut??! I liked his business/culinary motto. The owner is a guy I probably couldn't work with but would love to learn from.
Here is a released menu of his milk bar. Check out the et cetera section.
1.Beets: Think of beets as red spinach, Dr. Bowden said, because they are a rich source of folate as well as natural red pigments that may be cancer fighters. How to eat: Fresh, raw and grated to make a salad. Heating decreases the antioxidant power. 2.Cabbage: Loaded with nutrients like sulforaphane, a chemical said to boost cancer-fighting enzymes. How to eat: Asian-style slaw or as a crunchy topping on burgers and sandwiches. 3.Swiss chard: A leafy green vegetable packed with carotenoids that protect aging eyes. How to eat it: Chop and saute in olive oil. 4.Cinnamon: May help control blood sugar and cholesterol. How to eat it: Sprinkle on coffee or oatmeal. 5.Pomegranate juice: Appears to lower blood pressure and loaded with antioxidants. How to eat: Just drink it.
Last friday's special was a pesto crusted salmon over a bed of sauteed spinach with garlic and parmesan. We sold out that night and I can totally see. It was delicious!
I arrived in LA early in the morning... around 4AM. I was really hungry but it was too late to eat. I stayed @ Chat's place and I had her big bed to myself. The mattress was a little hard for my taste but Whatevs. It was comfy enough. I knock'd out!
I hear Chat walking around but I was too tired to get up that early. She ran some errands while I slumbered. I finally wake up and call her. She suggested a place for brunch in Santa Monica somewhere. We end up @ the Ford Filling Station[Harrison Ford's son]. The food was good but the mimosas were better. The dishes had a Southern influence. My hashbrowns was mixed with corn. I haven't seen it prepared like that before.
I woke sunday morning hungry as f*ck. I drank aloooot the night before and I needed to replenish. Anthony suggested a mom and pop restaurant. I always gauge a place by how good their eggs benedicts are. This place was good.
LUNCHTIME SUNDAY
We went to the Lobster Festival on sunday. I had just eaten a hearty breakfast; so, a big ass lobster was not on my mind. The rest of the crew had a lobster each. Anthony finished his lobster with the quickness. He said it wasn't enough. I didn't have any but I couldn't refuse tasting the lobster "mustard". That's where the real flavor is.
Where's Pauldo?
SUNDAY DINNER
I already forgot the name of the spot but the food was good. Anthony took us here. It was a fire station converted into a restaurant. It was in the middle of Glendale. A hidden gem. You wouldn't be able to find this place unless you looked hard.
I would describe Kat's color right now as hot pink. That's after only one drink. LOL!
Prosciutto wrapped asparagus.
Baked mac and cheese.
Blue cheese french fries.
Tran Ly and Eye.
We had more drinks but I think Kat was done @ this point. She was toasting with water. Don't ya know that's BAD luck!
Why you soo red, Kat?
OK. You're not red... just a little pink.
MONDAY BRUNCH
Anne calls me @ 11AM[I got home @ 6AM] and tells me that she's hungry. She wanted to have lunch early. WAS. NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN. We had lunch @ 2PM.
Green tea, Iced.
Krystel had something that looked like katsu with curry sauce.
Anne and Eye had the beef curry. It was mediocre.
I was still full from lunch but Anne wanted some fro-yo. She got the taro and original. I had a taste and it was good.
Our last stop was a spot that was "cash only". Anne needed an excuse to eat some more; so, we can get our parking ticket validated. I had the mango mochi and she had the red bean.
Last weekend was filled with good times and good food.
The thing people dread making in the restaurant is the steak tartar. It's time consuming and has many ingredients. I, on the other hand, love making this dish. It is time consuming but the end result is a dish worth serving to my friends. It is now back on our bar menu.
4 oz. petite filet red onion capers dijon mustard chopped parsley chive extra virgin olive oil salt&pepper egg yolk
Went to have a relaxing day on sunday. Had sangria and tapas @ FireFly. My goal this year was to try something new every week but the classic places just don't die. When I like a spot, I keep going there frequently. The place has great ambience, tasty food, and amazing sangrias. I heard the mojitos were good also. Here's a sampling of what we got.
Ham and cheese croquetas.
Paella.
Mac and cheese.
And for dessert... Banana nutella.
Low lighting equals low quality pics but you get the mood of the whole thing.
